Class of 1962Bill FlanneryThe beauty of youth... 1962 yearbook photo at Northeast Hi, St. Petersburg, FL ![]() The ravages of age, ... on the beach in Vladivostok, 2002 ![]() Life Story, expurgated... 1960-62 I left Man in 1960 when my family moved to St. Pete, FL. Went to Northeast Hi, played in the band, played in a combo, the Continentals, and then the Midniters... 1962-64 Went to the Univ. of Fl. in Gainesville... I remember studying very hard, and getting very drunk on weekends. Played in a little combo, the Playboys. 1964- ... went the Berkeley (the Univ. of California @) to study math.... got caught up in the anti-war movement. Demonstrated, etc., worked at Berkeley Scientific Labs and then Pacific RR, finally got a PhD...left for... 197? - my girlfriend at Berkeley was from New Orleans, and I ended up at LSU, she joined me, we got married, moved to New Orleans. 197? - back to Berkeley so my wife could get her PhD, she did, we split, I sold encyclopedias .. tough business. 1980 - after a 'walkabout' for a few years, I ended up at UF as an assistant professor, lasted 2 years. 1982 - There is a Honeywell plant in St. Pete making inertial guidance systems for airplanes, rockets, etc., and I got a job there. Worked on Star Wars (a 100% scam, believe me), the Galileo space probe, etc. Got bored. Got a job at Hughes in Palos Verdes, then Lockheed in Burbank, worked on various projects including the Stealth 'fighter'. I used to like to say that for the first 10 years of my career, it wouldn't have made any difference if I had stayed home, as I really didn't do anything. Got paid though. 1986 - Another walkabout, then I was back at Honeywell in St. Pete, did some interesting stuff on the Centaur rocket, the Mars Observer, and the space station. Then another 3 year walkabout, then I got married, and moved back to Ca. Got a job at Stanford Telecom working on GPS. Had daughter 1. Moved back to Berkeley and worked at Berkeley Process Control, and Octiv.com. 2000 - The millennium found me on another walkabout that I'm still on. I remarried, have daughter 2. I'm playing sax in local clubs (I have a sax page at www.berkeleyscience.com/jam ), studying with a great player, and am trying to sell a calculus book I've written (and a calculus book page at www.berkeleyscience.com ). I'm still looking for a job, sort of! Jobs See above .....
New Pic, Skinny ![]() How my years at Man High School affected my life... Even when I was real little, I wanted to play an instrument. I got a guitar when I was maybe 8 and my dad got some fellow to give me lessons, but it was too tough. Then in the 7th grade I joined the jr. high band playing trumpet. The band master was Dale Parks. He had a little combo that had Jimmy Davidson and Stanley Calloway on tenor saxes. I loved that sound..... and still do. So I switched to tenor sax. Leroy Sharp had a band that played the local clubs, and Jimmy and Stan played sax in that group. Then Jimmy left Man, and I was the only other guy in town with a tenor sax, so I got to play in Leroy's band. I put my horn away for years........but now I'm back at it ......still love it. I was a pretty good math student, and my interest there was spurred by the times, with Sputnik and all. It's all portrayed really well in the move "October Sky". And I stuck with the math too, and even now am still at it.
